Can You Change a Front Door Handle Without Changing the Lock?

You can often change a front door handle without changing the lock

Even small changes to your front door, like swapping the handle, can make a big difference to the look of your property. If you’re wondering if you can change your front door handle without changing the lock, you’ve come to the right place.

We’re going to answer that question in depth with all the information you need to make your life easier. And, spoiler alert, when it comes to external doors, it’s not necessarily as straightforward as you’d think.

Can You Change a Front Door Handle Without Changing the Lock? The Short Answer

The simple answer is that yes, in a lot of cases you can change a front door handle without changing the lock.

However, external doors are typically more varied and often more complex than their indoor cousins. That means there are some exceptions and several things you need to consider before trying to change a front door handle without changing the lock.

Why Might You Want to Change a Front Door Handle Without Changing the Lock?

As we mentioned, changing the handle of a front door can be a purely stylistic choice. Or there may be one of a few other reasons you’re thinking about doing it and, particularly, why you’d like to achieve it without also changing your lock:

  • Simple maintenance – If your front door handle gets damaged or worn out, but the lock is still working fine, it’s better to be able to replace just the part needed, not the whole mechanism.
  • Ease and cost – Put simply, it’s cheaper and easier just to change a front door handle than to change the lock, too. Plus, you don’t have the additional expense and hassle of having to get new keys cut and swap out your old ones.
  • Compatibility – If your front door is an older or rarer model, it may have an unusual or specialised lock. In that case, finding a matching or compatible replacement can prove a challenge. It’s easier just to swap the handle and leave the lock in place if you can.

Important Considerations When Changing a Front Door Handle Without Changing the Lock

Making sure all your door hardware matches is a key consideration when changing a front door handle

There are several reasons, then, why it can be beneficial to change a front door handle without changing the lock. Before you decide if it is the right choice to make, however, you need to consider a few things.

Type of Door and Lock Mechanism

The type of front door you have and the lock mechanism it uses ultimately decides whether you can change the handle without also changing the lock. As well as how easy or otherwise it may be to do so.

The most important thing to discover about your front door is whether the lock mechanism is separate from the handle or if they’re two parts of an integrated system.

Wooden front doors are most likely to have a separate system, such as a single point locking mechanism. That’s where the lock operates a deadbolt or similar, and the handle is for a completely separate latch. In that case, replacing a front door handle without changing the lock is often straightforward.

More modern doors are likely to have an integrated mechanism, such as a multi-point locking system. That’s where the handle and lock work together as part of the same setup. Doors where you have to lift up the handle before you can turn your key are the most obvious example.

In those cases, changing the handle without also changing the lock is trickier. The most modern composite doors, however, are designed to have modular components, meaning changing just one element is possible as long as you know what you’re doing.

Accurate Measurements

If you do find that changing the handle without changing the lock is possible for your front door, and decide that you want to, there’s one thing that matters more than anything else. Accurate measurement.

Door handles aren’t standardised. They’re not all designed to be interchangeable. So, when replacing a front door handle, you must take a lot of measurements to check that your new handle is compatible.

You’ll need to measure:

  • The distance from the edge of the door to centre of the handle hole, which is known as the backset.
  • The thickness of your door. Different handles are designed for different ranges of thickness.
  • The positioning and dimensions of the cross bore and edge bore. Those are the holes on the face and edge of the front door, respectively. They must be in the right place and be of the right size to suit your new handle.

Style of Handle

Today, there are lots of different types and styles of door handles to choose from. The task of changing a handle without also changing the lock is made easier if your new handle is of the same style as the one you’re replacing. If you’re switching it up, however, things can get more complicated.

A lever mechanism handle, for instance, may need slightly different fittings than a traditional doorknob. The main thing to ensure is that the style of handle you choose for your replacement is compatible with your existing lock. That often comes down to the measurements we mentioned above, but if you’re not sure, you could always ask Door Warehouse’s friendly team for advice.

Can I Change a Front Door Handle Myself?

Now you know if it’s possible to change your front door handle without changing the lock, the next logical question is whether you should do it yourself. The answer largely depends on the type of door, the specific locking mechanism, and your own proficiency at DIY.

If you’ve never changed a door handle or done any type of similar DIY project, starting with your front door is probably not a sensible choice. If anything goes wrong, it will be very visible and potentially a lot of hassle to rectify.

Assuming you have a little more experience, changing the handle yourself on a simple front door with a single-point locking mechanism should be eminently possible. Particularly in the case of a wooden door.

Doors of different materials and more complex construction, however, pose a greater challenge. Unless you’re a competent and confident DIYer, changing the handles of composite or uPVC doors, even with their modular components, can be a challenge.

If you’ve got a higher end and more specialised door, such as a Rockdoor that’s designed with advanced security features, it’s almost always best to leave any changes to a professional.
